First shows on the Truth Tour

August 10th, 2004

Holy macaroni. We’ve done 3 shows so far and they keep getting better. It started off pretty crazy. All of us except Kanye and John Legend flew into Hampton, Virginia on the 3rd, 2 days before the first show. I got there and met the rest of the guys: Don C (Kanye’s manager), GLC and Consequence, Bobby, who’s in charge of merch and who I share hotel rooms with, and Lil Man, who’s Kanye’s right-hand man/barber/wardrobe guy. I had no idea what our set was going to be like; I wasn’t even 100% sure if I would get to do a solo set. All I knew was that we had a 35 minute slot and that we wouldn’t have a lot of time for rehearsals.

Kanye arrived on the 5th, late afternoon, with John. He had already decided the order of the songs and left a spot for me to do a solo in the middle, after “The New Workout Plan”. Later on we set up some turntables in my hotel room and I showed him a bunch of routines. We decided to go for either one of my 2 Jay-Z juggles. The next morning, after having slept barely 3 and a half hours, we had a 2 hour rehearsal at the venue. We went over the set 3 times. They had some visuals set up and everything. And that was it… that night we performed our first show, in front of 12,000 screaming fans. Mostly girls. I could get used to this. No, seriously, it was great. It’s incredible how much they react to his songs.

Every night after the shows we go to after-parties and get our two-step game on. The first night it was a party that Bink put together in Virginia Beach. That was cool, meeting him. I’ve always liked his drum programming… On the 6th we went to Baltimore. LA Reid was at the show! That afternoon before the show we went to the mall to film some Gap footage that they wanted to add to the Spaceship visuals. (“Let’s go back, back to the Gap…”) Let me tell you, walking into a mall with Kanye West is an experience like no other. Beatlemania! I was in charge of filming, and we couldn’t let the security guards see the camera so I was filming from the hip, guerilla-style. After filming the Gap stuff we walked into a sneaker store. At that point there were so many people following Kanye that they closed off the store for us, so that we could shop… That was some other shyiet. And last night our show was in Raleigh, North Carolina. Now we’re on the bus, driving from NC to Toronto… Long drive.

OK, that’s it for today. Sleepy time.
