Happy Thanksgiving yall… although I still don’t quite understand what this holiday is.
You see, I grew up in Canada where there’s a holiday called Thanksgiving except it’s 1 month earlier than in America and more importantly no one cares about it. Growing up I knew that in the US there was some sort of tradition with turkey and stuffing for “their” Thanksgiving. However it’s only when I started travelling for gigs that I realized that this is basically the biggest holiday of the year. Bigger than Christmas! Airports clog up completely. Everything is closed, the world stops spinning. Tell that to a Canadian and he’ll be like, “on Thanksgiving??”.
In fact it’s only when I hit the road with Kanyeezy that I had my first Thanksgiving dinners. I spent 4 consecutive Thanksgivings on tour with those dudes and each one was stranger than the other. I don’t know what was more otherworldly — the time I was on a tour bus with GLC, Really Doe and the stylist and we stopped in a small Louisiana town to have dinner with the bus driver’s relatives, or the time we were in New Zealand with Kanye and Common and the ladies of the tour cooked us all a feast in our fancy hotel by the water.
The irony today is, I’m on my way to London, Ontario to play a show, and then I’m going to Montreal to see my family. So I’m spending Thanksgiving weekend in Canada, where the holiday isn’t celebrated. Some people object to Turkey Day for ethical reasons, because of the slaughtered Native Americans. In my case it’s much simpler: I just don’t get it.
