Animal Adventure: Wombats
December 11th, 2008
Look at this thing! Doesn’t it make you want to move to Australia?
The very informative wombania.com gave me the following fun facts about wombats: they are simultaneously mammals and marsupials. They are native to only Australia, but most Australians have never seen a live wombat. Wombania.com suggests they look like small bears, I think they look like pillows. They are nocturnal gazers. They are extremely strong and proficient diggers (DITC!). And they are generally solitary.
Here’s to wombats, one of my favorite animals/pillows.

All living species are classified in a hierarchical order which is Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genius, Species. Within these groups there can be sub groups. Wombats are in the Class Mammalia (or mamal). This Class has three subclasses: monotremes, MARSUPIALS, and placentals. So Wambats are in the Kingdom Animalia, Phylum, Cordata (because they have a spinal cord) sub-phylum Verbrata, Class Mammailia, and sub-class marsupials (metatheria).
Hiya, I am from Tasmania and 8 or more years ago when I was at artschool in Launceston, our friends accidently ran over a wombat, on closer inspection the pouch area was moving, out came a very very young womabt, no hair yet even. My friend Lucy took her home and woke up every two hours to bottle feed her, she came to artschool everyday for the coming months in a backpack with hotwater bottles. In short, Piggy, her name became part of the artschook pack. She was super cute, and would flatten when you hugged her, and rub her lips against your face. Make a clicking sound with her teeth when she happy, she loved showers etc. When they get older they get more destructive in the house and obviously the idea was to let her back into the bush. She was given to a wildlife shelter place for this purpose but was being attacked and harressed by a wombat named Milly. naughty Milly. The wildlife pople didn’t let Lucy know otherwise she would have collected her. So a lady picked her up seeing her distress, this woman lived in a neighbouring suburb from Piggy had grown up. Piggy got out and was lost for a few days until a radio call out found her again. She was picked up by a biker on a traffice island of a super busy road and re-united with Lucy. Piggy ended up with Lucy’s ex on bush farm, she was allowed to roam free. Eventually she spent less and less time at the house and would go off for months at a time, until she had been gone a year and came back to show she had babies. This is a super happy Wombat story, and one that I treasure. When wombats are good they are very very good when they are bad they are super naughty and destructive. Unfortunately we still have a real problem with road kill here and the government keeps cutting down the native forest for wood chips. But Wombats rock.
Hello, but ALL marsupials are mammals.
Your statement about Wombats is like saying “My Civic is simultaneously a car and a vehicle!”
