Consumer report: Twitter apps for BlackBerry

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

To fully dive into the Twitter experience you need it on your phone. You have to be able to tweet something as soon as it crosses your mind. Sure there’s a way to make it work through text messages but if you have a BlackBerry you’re gonnna want a proper app. I’ve tried 4 different ones in the last couple months so I thought I’d round up my thoughts on each one. Here is my first ever consumer report.

1. TwitterBerry

This is usually the first Twitter app that people get on a BlackBerry. For a long time I think it was the only one, and the name really gives you the impression that it’s all you need. At first glance it seems like it does the trick. After all, Twitter is pretty simple: you send your tweets, you follow your friends’ timeline and you check your replies. However Twitterberry is lacking in a few functions. The biggest thing missing is the absence of Direct Messages. You also can’t go look at someone’s profile, nor can you follow/unfollow users from Twitterberry, nor is there a ReTweet option. The most frustrating problem is just that it sometimes freezes, and nothing on a BlackBerry should ever freeze. Still, it remains the de facto program for most BlackBerry users.

Rating: 6/10

This deserves a re-post: the cardboard cut-out

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Cardboard cutout

I talked about this cardboard cut-out of Mehdi and me as Men In Black in my Pitchfork Guest List so lots of people have been asking to see it lately. When we got it as a gift at an LA show, my idea was to take pictures of it all around the world like in Amelie. But then we lost it the next day. We still got enough shots to make this gif though. This was on the first Fool’s Gold tour in October 2007.

I gotta give a give a big shout out to the artist who made this, his name is Busc check him out!

Fashionable swine flu masks

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

The other day as I was waiting in line at immigration in Hong Kong observing all the swine flu masks, I wrote a quick twitter saying I wanted a an actual swine mask with just a snout to cover my nose and mouth. I quickly found out there is already such a thing, and not only that but a whole slew of designs for masks.

This girl Irina Blok is selling all these designs and giving the proceeds to Children International to help Mexico fight the swine flu epidemic:

And then there’s all this stuff:

However this blog had an interesting article quoting a specialist who explained that these masks couldn’t work because a reusable mask defeats the whole purpose of protecting yourself from germs!

Amazing gizmo: the Flowbee

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Big shout out to the homie Tittsworth for putting me on to this revolutionary invention. He was actually hoping to find a Flowbee at his seat in a utopian business class flight. As you can see it’s a clipper-vacuum combination that eliminates the mess for “professional style haircuts at a fraction of the cost!”

Visit the Flowbee website!

Animal Adventure: Singapore’s Night Safari

Monday, May 18th, 2009

OK so you know I’m currently on tour in Asia. I just spent the weekend in Singapore. Running around with the False posse, I got wind of this Night Safari thing. It’s a zoo that’s only open at night! The only one in the world. Of course I had to check it out. In fact it’s only open from 7pm to midnight (those animals must have a good union) and we got there at 11pm so we had to hurry but it was still an incomparable experience.

I think my Twitter activity from that evening shows you what state of mind I was in:

“I’m going to Singapore’s nighttime zoo where I will mingle with nocturnal animals. Night safari I am so ready.”

“First animal at the night safari: a mouse-deer. Whoa!”

“Looking for the malaysian flying fox. These howling noises are scaring me shitless.” (It’s true, the wolves were howling like crazy in the dark.)

“Flying squirrels are big! Almost like a racoon and red. Big furry tail. I’m in the enclosure with it. Less affable than Rocky.”

“When a leopard pees it still looks majestic.”

All in all I saw mousedeer, fishing cat, otters, indian wolves, striped hyena, leopards, long-tailed porcupine, malay civet, flying fox and a giant flying squirrel… at night! All in 45 minutes.

Plenty more pictures after the jump.
