How to Mix. Mixing with Mike Chav – Lesson 1 : Kick Drum from Mike Chav on Vimeo.

Very informative video from super engineer Mike Chav giving you tips on how to mix a kick drum. I love watching these sorts of videos because I really enjoy mixing but I’m self-taught so I always pick up on tips that I wouldn’t have tried otherwise. I like how he says that he tends to start most mixes with the vocals because they’re the focal point. I always start with the drums! I should try that. And once he gets into the kick drum, he shows how he duplicates it and mixes the kick in 3 frequency bands with their own compression. I remember my man KLC (of Beats by the Pound) told me about that technique a while back but I never tried it. For the Kid Sister album we got another big-name engineer, Tony Maserati, to mix some of the tracks. I watched him work and he did that on my kicks for “Get Fresh”.

good video. i’ve heard of people doing that alot with kick, sd, and hats. the drum kits in Logic sound so good right out the gate.. Im wondering if eq’ing them is even necessary?
