Around the World pt. 20: A Taste of Asia Tour – Week 1

June 12th, 2009

As posted on the fab Fader blog.

This humongous cross-continent tour was a great success as much on a professional, gig level as on a personal fulfillment level. I’m going to break it up by week for the blog because I have lots and lots of stories. Let’s sit around the campfire, so to speak.

Mindspray: transitory hairstyles while getting a haircut

June 11th, 2009

You know when you’re getting a haircut, do you ever look at yourself in the mirror when your hair is in a really different conformation and think “what if”? I think that’s one of the funnest parts of haircuts: getting to see your hair in all these unusual shapes. The hairdresser has to move your hair around for certain stages of the cut and as a result you get to play dress-up. Here are a few of my personal classics:

- If I get a fade I go through a sort of bowl-cut phase when it’s only the bottom half of my head that’s been cut. What if there was a fire and it stopped there?

- When it’s time to cut the top of the sides I usually get a slick 50′s side part. Makes me look like my dad.

- When he’s cutting the top I can go through an indie-dude-with-bangs step, pictured above.

- More often than not after getting my hair washed I come out looking like former Montreal Canadians coach Pat Burns.

And then when the haircut is finished it ends up looking exactly like the last one.

Toy with Kidrobot and Dust La Rock

June 10th, 2009

You see the bear at the top of this blog? His name is Grateful and he’s been my buddy for many years, ever since he appearing in the previous incarnation of djatrak.com. He was created by Dust La Rock, and soon he can be your friend too. Dust and I started working on a toy with Kid Robot a while back, even before the birth of Fool’s Gold. It takes patience to make one of these things and I’ve been itching to talk about it for so long… Ladies and gents here we are now, it’s official, it’s 8 inches tall (pause) and it’s coming out in early July!

Download Seiji “Hohoho”

June 05th, 2009

If Seiji isn’t already on your radar, he should be. The London producer is part of the Bugz In The Attic collective and his remix of Erykah Badu’s “Honey” was one of my favorite tracks of 2008. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Crookers EP on Fool’s Gold where Seiji remixed the Kid Cudi collaboration “Embrace The Martian”.

He recently launched a new site seiji.co.uk where you can grab some free goodies, including this track “Ho Ho Ho”.

Big L Tribute Mix by DJ Soul

June 05th, 2009

It’s pretty baffling that there hasn’t been a definitive Big L mix after all these years. It’s also crazy that it’s already been 10 years since his passing. You can always count on DJ Soul for a thorough retrospective though, and as expected he delivers exactly what the legacy needed.

Highly recommended, download the mixtape HERE.

Full tracklisting after the jump.

Hotel Guide: Beijing’s Opposite House

June 01st, 2009

I was actually getting sick when I filmed this, I don’t know if you can tell. Exhaustion was settling in. The pacing is sizzurp-like. But the hotel is really, really lovely.
