I really didn’t want to write about so-called Kanye gate…
In fact I still don’t want to comment on this whole Kanye situation. It’s a personal choice that I made and I’m sticking to it. However what’s been appalling, I’d even say traumatizing, is the outburst of openly racist attacks directed at him. A post on Harry Allen’s blog recaps many such tweets, all with open use of the N-word and talk of lynching. Clearly the idea of a post-racial society in the Obama age is extremely naive. Yesterday this made its way onto my own blog with the following comment to my post about Jordans and Super sunglasses:

I can’t even explain the level of shock that I’m in as I read this. I’m not deleting that comment, people need to see it and be aware that racism is still everywhere around us. These are deeply-rooted, historically poignant slurs. How long will it take for America to vanquish this poison?
PS: If you’re going to comment on this post, please stick to this topic of racism, not what Kanye said at the awards. I want to know what you think…

as is said…racism is bullshit… you don’t know what you’re missing by not getting in touch with different cultures and sharing good times with friends from different cultural and social backgrounds..that is priceless.. waking up every day and being in touch with different cultures from all parts of the planet is quite a satisfying thing..the food, the points of view the different wisdoms being shared..that’s good life baby, and I enjoy it every day and an experience like this cannot be bought with money only gained through positive living!!!

Just a general observation:
I’ve always been surprised how little foreigners understand the intricacies of african-american racism and its history. For me, it’s always been a sign of how unique this problem is.
I’ve done a decent amount of traveling, and there has been several occasions where I’ve watched a show or movie (chapelle, chris rock) involving jokes being made about this exact tension, and the jokes being totally lost on people from different countries. It just doesn’t translate. You can spend an hour explaining why something about black-white tension is funny to us, and at the end of the hour they still say it’s racist and inappropriate.
I don’t have a solution to this, just recognize it’s a shitty problem. We still have growing up to do.
