YYYs

We pressed up a limited run of white labels of my Yeah Yeah Yeahs remix… this smells like a collector’s item! Also smells like a Christmas present, if you ask me. Get them while you can at Turntable Lab.

Fool’s Gold Holiday Party in NY next Saturday

December 14th, 2009

Flyer

Next Saturday (12/19) Fool’s Gold is throwing a holiday party in NYC with our pals at LTD Mag. Just Blaze will play a house set! Ever since we first started the record label Nick and I have had this idea in the back of heads to do something house-related with Just Blaze. The great Max Glazer will also be on deck duties, as well as @catchdini and a sibling set by Dave and myself.

It’s an early one, starts at 9pm. Come celebrate the non-denominational holidays with us! Free with RSVP.

Images from Haze’s NY Exhibition that I DJ’d

December 09th, 2009

Last month I had the honor of DJing Eric Haze’s first art show in years, New Abstracts and Icons at New York’s Level 2 Gallery. It was a classic New York affair, exemplified by the picture I snapped below of the man himself with Lee from Wild Style.

As the exhibition draws to a close, Haze posted some pictures and words on his 12oz Prophet blog. (I snatched the other pics in this post from there.) It’s fascinating to read his personal take on coming up as an artist in the 80s alongside Keith Haring, Futura et al., and how these guys got into to the art scene with illustrated works while he gravitated more towards graphic design and lettering… only to finally come full circle (no pun intended) with the abstract works in this new show. Made me reflect on the different forms of music that DJs dabble in. I encourage you to read it!

Chromeo “Night By Night” video

December 08th, 2009

Another zany video to add to Chromeo’s collection. This one was directed by Jeremie Rozan from Surface To Air, who also did “Tenderoni” for them and the pottery version of “aNYway” for Duck Sauce. Check out my brother’s moves!

More info on “Night By Night” on the Green Label Sound page.

Philippe Zdar on the Yamaha CS-80

December 03rd, 2009

Philippe Zdar on the Yamaha CS80 from will seelig on Vimeo.

I’ve wanted to post something about Zdar for a while, so when I stumbled upon this video it seemed like the perfect pretext.

Philippe Zdar is 1/2 of Cassius (who in the 90s were known as La Funk Mob and used to produce hip hop tracks for MC Solaar) and he’s also my favorite mixing engineer. One of the true wizards of sound. He mixed down Chromeo’s Fancy Footwork album, which is how I came to hearing endless stories about the man and the myth, through my brother. Sometimes I mix Chromeo’s live backing tracks and I try to match Zdar’s work. It’s impossible. His tracks sound like they’re straight from the late 70′s, they’ve got more warmth and attitude than anything else out there today. He’s done a good part of Phoenix’s music as well.

In this particular clip however, he shows the good folks at Future Music his CS-80 synth and it’s just fun to listen to his accent.

Nike releases DJ AM’s Dunks

December 02nd, 2009

In the months before his untimely passing, DJ AM was preparing the launch of his very own Nike Dunk sneaker. In fact I remember at the memorial service in LA they had just received the sample. Well, it’s been announced that Nike’s about to release the shoe and the images are out. Notice the turntable platter-inspired dots around the heel, and of course his logo on the tongue.

I don’t think a release date has been set, but in the meantime make sure to check out the DJ AM memorial fund Ebay auction of his notorious sneaker collection.

We miss you homie.
