Trevor Jackson presents: NOWHERE

February 20th, 2011

Trevor Jackson isn’t a stranger to this blog. He’s been a friend of the Brothers Macklovitch for many years and if you aren’t familiar with his work I strongly suggest you spend a bit of time browsing through his site. To my DJ peers he might be known mostly for his music, ranging from the excellent Playgroup project all the way back to early 90′s remixes of hip hop greats under the name Underdog. But he’s also an accomplished graphic designer, with memorable album covers for Soulwax and The Rapture (Echoes) under his belt.

His first solo art show will be premiering soon at KK Outlet in London.

NOWHERE features highly personal photographic and video studies that explore related themes of honesty, simplicity, manipulation and ego.” I can dig it.

The exhibition runs March 4 – 26. More info here.

Production Tips: Mixing rap vocals

February 08th, 2011

I like mixing. Studio mixing. It’s one of my favorite things to do. You know how some people do gardening and they just zone out? I think that’s how I relate to mixing.

I stumbled upon this great article on mixing rap vocals written by engineer Matthew Weiss. I like how he emphasized on how important it is to know what kind of mix you’re going for, to have certain references… going from the classic mid-90′s Bob Power grit to the glossy Bad Boy sheen. Anyway, check it out!

Project Pat… Mista Don’t Play but he does play weddings

This is just as simple as glorious as the title suggests…. Project Pat-uh performs at a wedding.

Barbra gets lost on her way to Argentina

December 22nd, 2010

This is fantastic. A TV station in Argentina made a cheap cover of “Barbra Streisand” for their new commercial. It reminds me of back when all the shampoo commercials in the 90s had songs that copied US3 “Cantaloop”.

#internetrappers

December 20th, 2010

This afternoon my twitter feed was taken over by #internetrapper puns, which immediately reminded me of #jewishrapnames (my favorite moment in twitter history).

I only came up with my couple but my @replies were a goldmine. This needs to be documented. Here are my favorites:

Carte Blanche x Kid Sister x Fafi x Yué video

December 06th, 2010

This song was originally featured on Dirty South Dance 2 and on Carte Blanche’s Black Billionaires EP (Ed Banger). There’s a Laidback Luke remix coming out next week, and now here is the video, directed by our homegirl Fafi and Yué. Do that dance.

Theophilus London “Flying Overseas” video

November 22nd, 2010

The homie Theophilus London delivers his best video yet for the excellent “Flying Overseas”, a collaboration with Dev Hynes and Solange Knowles.

Chromeo “Hot Mess” video is arrestingly good

November 12th, 2010

At this stage when Chromeo come out with a video you know you can expect some role-playing. The question is simply, what will it be this time? Well now they’re cops.

Directed by frequent collaborator Jérémie Rozan of Surface To Air, this time it’s P-Thugg’s time to shine. You have the right to remain funky.

Phoenix: the making of Wolfgang Amadeus…

October 15th, 2010

For the last 2 weeks, Phoenix have been posting these “making of…” videos on their blog, dissecting the genesis of the album that topped my Best Of 2009 list. The cool thing is that for every song you get 2 commentaries: one by the band and one by Zdar, who not only mixed the album but also served as sort of guru/co-producer. Of course Zdar also mixes Chromeo’s albums and I’ve written about him before.

The clips for the 9 songs are up on their site now, make sure you go check them out. Work on your French.

Chromeo on Letterman! Whoa.

September 21st, 2010

“Our next guests are an acclaimed duo from Montreal, Canada…”

Um, hi everyone. Haven’t posted much lately but I’m about to fix that. For starters, let’s watch a video that has me beaming with pride, Chromeo on The Late Show with David Letterman last night. Note: the other guests were Bill Clinton and the Merengue Dog. I think our boys fit very nicely in the middle.

If you hadn’t heard, their new album Business Casual is out now in North America (out next week in the UK), make sure you pick it up and check their site for more info.
