15Philippe Zdar on the Yamaha CS-80
Philippe Zdar on the Yamaha CS80 from will seelig on Vimeo.
I’ve wanted to post something about Zdar for a while, so when I stumbled upon this video it seemed like the perfect pretext.
Philippe Zdar is 1/2 of Cassius (who in the 90s were known as La Funk Mob and used to produce hip hop tracks for MC Solaar) and he’s also my favorite mixing engineer. One of the true wizards of sound. He mixed down Chromeo’s Fancy Footwork album, which is how I came to hearing endless stories about the man and the myth, through my brother. Sometimes I mix Chromeo’s live backing tracks and I try to match Zdar’s work. It’s impossible. His tracks sound like they’re straight from the late 70′s, they’ve got more warmth and attitude than anything else out there today. He’s done a good part of Phoenix’s music as well.
In this particular clip however, he shows the good folks at Future Music his CS-80 synth and it’s just fun to listen to his accent.
I wanna see this guy vs. Jamie from the xx
Misha from Perks And Mini: Stool
Got these pics in my inbox from the homie Misha, 1/2 of Perks And Mini (in my top 5 brands for sure). He’s been doing these art installations based on, well, poop.
First peep these ones from Melbourne’s Y3K gallery:
Dublab’s Secondhand Sureshots
You can count on Stones Throw to keep the beat diggers happy…
Secondhand Sureshots is a filmed experiment in creative sound recycling. Dublab directors Bryan “Morpho” Younce & Mark “frosty” McNeill sent beatmakers Daedelus, Nobody, J.Rocc and Ras G on safari into L.A. thrift stores with orders to make new music out of five finds while the cameras filmed the whole process. The result is a mini-documentary about putting new life into old vinyl. Over 2 hours of footage, music & bonus material.
More info on stonesthrow.com.
By the way, in less dusty news… don’t sleep on J.Rocc’s classic early 90′s house and techno crates. We had a lil’ session last week.
Countdown on DJ Mehdi’s blog

My vacation buddy DJ Mehdi has a remix compilation coming out on Monday entitled Red Black & Blue. Over on his section of the Cool Cats blog he’s been running a countdown for about 2 weeks now, every day leaking a song and its accompanying artwork panel with detailed storytelling. For example above he reminisces on finishing his Holy Ghost! remix in a Belgian hotel room with feedback from myself and Sebastian. Listen to it below and make sure you cop the comp next week!
I could listen to RZA speak for days
What is the duty of a civilized person, Rzarecta?
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of RZA’s oratory skills. In fact I once wrote a book review for Vice on his book, the Wu Tang Manual. I’m so glad everything is archived nowadays.
And to think, just 2 weeks ago I was fiending for the Abbot’s words…

Superdeux and Kidrobot present the Auto + USBoombox toy
Tomorrow in SF there’s a release party at the Kidrobot store for this cute lil’ toy that comes courtesy of French artist Superdeux. The boombox is actually a 1 GB flashdrive. I think I’m still in a Halloween mindset… I’m looking at this thinking “maybe I should have put a big cassette on my head this weekend.”
In the news: Don’t throw poop!
The Associated Press reports:
SAN DIEGO – A man who sneaked a bag of his feces into a San Diego courtroom during his home-invasion robbery trial, smeared it on his lawyer and threw it at jurors has been sentenced to 31 years in prison.
Superior Court Judge Frank Brown on Monday sentenced Weusi McGowan for robbery, burglary and two assault charges stemming from the feces-flinging incident during his January trial.
McGowan, who attorneys say suffers from mental illness, had asked for a mistrial because he believed jurors had seen him in restraints when he entered the courtroom.
Several days after his request was denied, McGowan pulled out a bag of excrement he had hidden in his clothing, rubbed it on his lawyer and tossed it at the jury, hitting one juror’s computer case.
