2 great “Making of…” articles
So last week out of the clear blue skies, two excellent “making of” articles were published at the same time about two truly seminal albums. I need to share these, they’re absolutely stellar. Must-reads.
New York Mag: The birth of the Beastie Boys – an oral history on the 25th anniversary of Licensed To Ill.
Complex presents: the making of Mobb Deep’s The Infamous.
The Beasties article is interesting to me because it goes so far back in time (starts in 1981!) but in fact, in the DYI spirit of the era and the convergence of music scenes it actually makes me think of the current climate. Also, quotes from the homie Dante Ross! I’ve said this a bunch of times before: the Beastie Boys were the original funky white boys in hip hop, they laid the blueprint and are my gosh-darn heroes. Their new album is good, too. (Zdar!)
The Mobb Deep piece is crazy. What struck me the most was the importance of Q-Tip. Of course I always knew that he produced a few joints on the album but this article really shows us how much of a bigger role he played in shaping the whole sound, swapping out drum samples, fixing drum patterns, mixing other songs, assisting with mastering… Also, the commentary from Matty C and Schott Free is golden. Add to that Havoc’s account of Prodigy’s unorthodox creativity, Pee teaching Hav how to use a sampler, etc., and you’ll be hooked.
Book: Mike Mills “Graphics/Films”
Mike Mills: Graphics Films is the first retrospective monograph covering fifteen years of Mills’ work in the fields of graphic design, film and art. The book includes album cover designs that have become part of our cultural landscape, such as work for The Beastie Boys, Beck, Sonic Youth, as well as his covers and videos for the French band Air. Also included are graphics, textiles, and t-shirts for Marc Jacobs, X-Girl, and Humans, as well as rarely seen documentation of his fine art work and worldwide exhibitions.

Shoulda Brought a Camera
You’re gonna have to use your imagination to picture this story, just like in the olden days. But you know what? It’s kind of doper that I didn’t have a camera. I’m gonna talk about this BBQ that I went to at Haze’s house earlier in the week. Haze, the OG of this graphic design shit. So ill!!! WARNING: THIS BLOG IS LONGER THAN IT SEEMS.
