Around The World, Pt.31: Coachella
Coachella is a classy affair, my favorite music festival in America. I’ve played there a few times over the years: in 1999 with Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike. In 2006 with Kanye. In 2008 with Kid Sister. But this year felt extra special. First of all because I was playing twice: solo and with Duck Sauce. And second, because Chromeo was also on the bill so it was a family affair. It felt like the culmination of years of going there with various collaborators and eating the spicy pizza in the VIP tent.
The Magic 8-Ball Tour is ready to roll
Guess what I’ll be doing right after Coachella?
I’m going to hop on a tour bus with Kid Sister and The Gaslamp Killer and criss-cross our fair continent for a month, with the sole purpose of bringing the noise. Catch us in a city near you!

Recapping the last couple of months
I’ll be the first to admit, my blogging took a dip in March and April. I hate to play the “I’m Busy” card but… I was really busy! I started my collaboration with Travis Barker in LA, then with Fool’s Gold we organized parties at SXSW, WMC and Coachella, and I came home and finished my mixtape. It would be a bit crazy to go back and do a detailed Around The World post for these trips at this point in the game, but here are some highlights at least!
First, SXSW
This year in Austin we had 2 Fool’s Gold events. The first one was more of a big club show with Travis and I headlining. It was rammed, there was a line down the block before we even opened doors. The second show was the label’s official SXSW showcase where all our new bands, DJs and rap dudes performed (too many to name!). I loved the location, it was at a spot called Malverde with an open terrace right behind the stage and plenty of foliage. Ferns! It really felt different from all the other industry shindigs going on. Then the next day the temperature suddenly dropped to 40 degrees Farenheit. For Austin that’s just weird.

Miami WMC
Like we do every year, there was a big FG party, this time in a new venue though. Armand and I played our first Duck Sauce set, which seemingly got the word out on the internets about a new song named after a singer of yore. I never went to sleep earlier than 6am the whole week. I played at Ultra under the beating sun. I went to see Steve Angello DJ one night and Shaggy grabbed the mic… that was funny. Wound up at Diddy’s house again on my last night.
Coachella
I went to Coachella with my brother and Nick. We rented a house which I nicknamed the Wu Mansion. We did a party with Stones Throw where we only played old house and disco. We also played at the Anthem Lagoon pool party with some of our buddies. Heard some good music at the festival, my favorite were Phoenix. No big surprise there. Although when I got home I saw youtube clips of Plastikman’s show and was floored, I wish I saw it live.
Fool’s Gold and Stones Throw meet at Coachella

SOUNDCLASH in Palm Springs!
We’re teaming up with one of my favorite labels Stones Throw for a side party on the Friday of Coachella at the Ace hotel. RSVP here, it’s free.
Speaking of Stones Throw, did you see the packaging on their new J Dilla x Serato vinyl? Kudos, gentlemen… Designed by Studio No.1.
Around the World, pt. 18
As posted on the fab Fader blog.
As I sit back and nurse the knockout that all these criss-crossing flights served me, I’m starting to remember what took place in the two weeks since I last wrote. I was halfway into my European tour, leaving Paris. I headed back to London, only to go to Brighton for a gig at Digital. Everyone in London was psyching me up about that club, its sound system and the fact that it’s right on the beach. “The beach, Jerry!” I think there’s a back door that opens to a pier. Might be a bit dangerous for the late night stumblers. Also, London DJs have this way of doing gigs in neighboring cities and driving back the same night after the gig, rather than getting a hotel. I shared a ride with Riva Starr. On the way down he played me his new klezmer-techno album. If you saw this post a few weeks ago you’ll conclude that this is an interesting new trend. On the way back I just tried to sleep, but there’s no way around the fact that I got in dangerously late.
Coachillin’: the recap
First things first, make sure you check out the official recaps of the Screaming Bloody Murder tour here and here. We did 8 untamed shows in 10 days, it felt like a barbarous blitz of rave riot. Sammy Bananas is the new official mascot of Fool’s Gold and his mustache couldn’t have been more timely. Steve is a dynamo, I don’t know where he gets his energy. And Sinden is my brother from a British mother. I can officially say the 2nd Fool’s Gold tour was a smash hit, and before I could even catch up with any sleep I was off to Coachella.
Is it June already??
OK I admit it. I messed up. I waited too long since the last update and now I have to rack my brain, look through my calendar and my iPhoto and figure out what the hell I’ve been up to for the past 2 months. Ah well, here goes… This one’s for you, Internet.
I think the last time I BLOGGED was right before Coachella. (I no longer run away from the word blog. See? I just blogged the word blog.) By a bizarre twist of booking fate I was actually absent on the first day of the festival when my better half was giving her big performance. Truth is, I accepted this show with Stretch that paid a heck of a lot of moola. So while Kid Sister was rocking on the same stage that friggin’ Bjork was gonna perform on, I was out in Memphis playing a corporate gig and being intensely existential.
