Around The World Pt.34: Summer 2011
As posted on the fab Fader blog.
Hi internet! I feel like writing again. Will you humor me and read my musings? Even in this “click-through” age, can I still write more than 500 words? I hope so because it’s helping me kill time on this flight. It’s been a while since I wrote an “Around The World” post, ironically because I’ve been busy going around the world. I’m not even sure where to start, I’ll just take you through highlights of my last couple months of touring. Walk with me.
Mehdi Forever mix + Fool’s Gold Radio (October)
For the October episode of Fool’s Gold Radio I decided to make a new intro dedicated to Mehdi, a megamix made of only his songs. You can grab it here by itself:

And here is the full radio podcast:

The Rapture “How Deep Is Your Love” (A-Trak Dub For Mehdi)
How Deep Is Your Love? (A-Trak Dub aka Dub For Mehdi) by DFA Records
I did this remix over the summer, and when I was close to finishing it I played it to my friend, the irreplaceable DJ Mehdi. We often played each other our productions for feedback. As it turns out he and Riton were visiting New York so they stopped by my apartment. I was working on the main version of the remix, the vocal version. I knew I would make a few alternate edits during the mixdown. The funny thing was, Mehdi’s favorite part was the ending! He and Riton suggested that I have that part come in earlier. My reaction was: that would work well for the dub version. And sure enough, when I finished mixing it down I made a dub with their suggestion. When I sent it to Mehdi shortly after, he responded (as a joke) that I should call it “Dub For Mehdi”. He included it in his “Tunisian Summer” mix. And then, as we all know, the unimaginable happened and we lost our dear friend. The least I can do now is name the edit after him. This one’s for you, Memed.

Mehdi Forever

How can I imagine life without Mehdi? It’s a question I never thought I would have to ask myself. Mehdi was without a doubt like a brother to me, a friend well beyond our music ties, a kindred spirit and someone who played an irreplaceable and constant role in my life. In the days since his passing I’ve been reflecting a lot on our friendship and felt the need to write down my thoughts. Here goes.
If I was Greek…
Carte Blanche x Kid Sister x Fafi x Yué video
This song was originally featured on Dirty South Dance 2 and on Carte Blanche’s Black Billionaires EP (Ed Banger). There’s a Laidback Luke remix coming out next week, and now here is the video, directed by our homegirl Fafi and Yué. Do that dance.

DJ Mehdi & Riton are: Carte Blanche

Don’t you love a good collaboration? Like uh, hello, Method Man & Redman were dope the first time around, before the deodorant commercial. So I am very pleased that Mehdi & Riton have announced their Carte Blanche project, because I’m super duper into it, they’re on some classic Chicago house meets Trax On Da Rocks tip and I think this is much needed in today’s overproduced hybrid climate. Back to basics. Let’s do it.

Not Just Yet
Perhaps you’re aware that there has been a swirl of rumors about me producing the next Madonna album. Here is my official statement on the matter, as presented today to Pitchfork:
“Those Madonna rumors started from a joke my boy DJ Mehdi made in an interview. Then it spread to Madonna fan-sites. Then the Daily Star fabricated a quote from me. Next thing you know it was on NME and MTV. I’m not opposed to the idea, but it’s all fiction for now. By the way, DJ Mehdi is producing the next Britney record.”
This article in XXL also gets the seal of approval from me.
It’s almost New Year’s Eve… LA let’s get it
I’ll be ringing in the new year (I never really understood this expression) in LA this week, and frankly you can’t really beat this line-up. Sometimes I dread NYE because I feel like too much to juggle, too many people to please, but not this year! I’m gonna be DJing my arse off with a big smile on my face. If you’re in the LA area I hope to see you there. I think there’s just a few tickets left, they’re going fast. Grab them over at Hard’s website.
Set times:
9pm: Destructo
10pm: DJ Mehdi
Midnight: A-Trak (new decade, hooooooo)
2am: Boys Noize
The only way you can be excused from coming to this show if you’re in town is if you’re checking out Chromeo at Club Nokia. Either way, Los Angeles, spend NYE with a Macklovitch. If you don’t you’re a bum.
