Farewell Fat Beats

September 09th, 2010

After 16 years of being the mecca of underground hip hop, Fat Beats closed its last remaining stores in New York and LA. I have a lot of history with the company, since my first record label Audio Research was distributed through them. So it was an honor to be invited to perform on the last day of a week of in-stores, last Saturday, alongside many greats like DJ Premier, Just Blaze and DJ Scratch. I did a full set of routines, I think it was about 17 minutes long! That’s like 3 DMC’s, yo. Peter Rosenberg captured some highlights, peep the video… and Fat Beats, I tip my fedora to thee.

DJs of the Zodiac: Premier

March 05th, 2009

Tonight I went and did a guest DJ set at DJ Eclipse’s legendary radio show, the Halftime Show on WNYU in New York. It’s their 11th anniversary and the guests were myself, Primo, Tony Touch, Da Beatminerz and JS-1. It was an honor to be there rocking with these guys. As you recall, Premier played the Fool’s Gold Holiday Party back in December. I’ve seen him destroy the decks a couple times recently. Oh and when Tony Touch wasn’t DJing he was on the radio station’s computer looking at his phone bill to try and find a number. Priceless.
Maybe I should start a series where I ask Djs about their zodiac sign? Did you all know that I share a birthday with MC Hammer, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, Norah Jones and Van Gogh?

Around the World, Pt. 12

January 06th, 2009

As posted on the fab Fader blog

Is everyone excited to be back at work? Would it piss you off if I told you that I’m in Sydney where it’s summertime? No, right? OK cool, you guys are good friends. Now let’s go over the last couple of weeks, shall we? So umm… I don’t even know where to start. Christmas/Hannukah time was a bit hectic for me because it’s deadline o’clock and I’m at the finish line for my Sebastien Tellier remix and this mix CD. (The former goes on the latter). As you may recall in my last post, we had that Fool’s Gold holiday party with the legendary DJ Premier and Cipha Sounds. Our sponsors Pepsi decorated the space heavily with Christmas trees and snow flakes. It was a bit more festive (in a family sort of way) than expected, but I think that just brought everyone together even more. Since practically everyone on Fool’s Gold was in town for the weekend, I had a little get-together at my house the next day and we sipped on egg-nog while listening to Catchdini’s tall tales of grimy New York hip hop. He’s an even better storyteller than Abe Simpson.

Is it June already??

June 22nd, 2007

OK I admit it. I messed up. I waited too long since the last update and now I have to rack my brain, look through my calendar and my iPhoto and figure out what the hell I’ve been up to for the past 2 months. Ah well, here goes… This one’s for you, Internet.

I think the last time I BLOGGED was right before Coachella. (I no longer run away from the word blog. See? I just blogged the word blog.) By a bizarre twist of booking fate I was actually absent on the first day of the festival when my better half was giving her big performance. Truth is, I accepted this show with Stretch that paid a heck of a lot of moola. So while Kid Sister was rocking on the same stage that friggin’ Bjork was gonna perform on, I was out in Memphis playing a corporate gig and being intensely existential.

Winter Music Conference

April 02nd, 2005

Last weekend was Winter Music Conference in sunny South Beach, Miami. I have to say, I usually don’t like WMC. The last couple of years, I felt like the parties were too messy – everybody too drunk to notice who’s even playing – and it was getting too electronic for my taste. But this year was pretty dope!
