Around The World Pt.34: Summer 2011

Hi internet! I feel like writing again. Will you humor me and read my musings? Even in this “click-through” age, can I still write more than 500 words? I hope so because it’s helping me kill time on this flight. It’s been a while since I wrote an “Around The World” post, ironically because I’ve been busy going around the world. I’m not even sure where to start, I’ll just take you through highlights of my last couple months of touring. Walk with me.

Czech fan mail… amazing

This mysterious envelope came to the Fool’s Gold office. It included a letter and something wrapped in a folded magazine page, sealed with scotch tape. I opened that makeshift sub-envelope while reading the letter and saw that it enclosed 1 dollar. Here’s the gist of the letter: fan in Czech Republic wanted to buy “Barbra Streisand” legally but all the territory restrictions blocked off his country. So his solution was to download it from a blog and mail us $1! As he wrote in his letter: “1 buck (or duck?)”. Amazing.

Filip, you’re the man. The Duck salutes you.

Around The World, Pt.31: Coachella

Coachella is a classy affair, my favorite music festival in America. I’ve played there a few times over the years: in 1999 with Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike. In 2006 with Kanye. In 2008 with Kid Sister. But this year felt extra special. First of all because I was playing twice: solo and with Duck Sauce. And second, because Chromeo was also on the bill so it was a family affair. It felt like the culmination of years of going there with various collaborators and eating the spicy pizza in the VIP tent.

Dopest spoof of the Barbra video

I’ve seen a lot of spoofs of the “Barbra Streisand” video. Some of them have been clever. All of them flattering. But I gotta say, this one is miles ahead of the pack.

Here is the backstory. There’s a Austrian politician called Ursula Stenzel. She’s apparently trying to pass a law to impose a 4am curfew on nightclubs. In that part of Europe that’s pretty uncommon. Clubs in Berlin can stay open as late as they want, for example. So these guys in Vienna decided to remake our video featuring the who’s-who of their local music scene, reenacting every scene, every guest, every piece of decor… EVERYTHING. Shot for shot. It’s nuts.

Armand was recently in Vienna so they were able to record him for a drop at the beginning. “Ursula Stressned” means “Ursula, don’t stress”.

Barbra gets lost on her way to Argentina

This is fantastic. A TV station in Argentina made a cheap cover of “Barbra Streisand” for their new commercial. It reminds me of back when all the shampoo commercials in the 90s had songs that copied US3 “Cantaloop”.
