Dust La Rock “B.K. Scum” exhibit opens March 4th

February 23rd, 2011

BK Scum

If you’re a regular visitor to this site, then you must know Dust La Rock: my art director and that of my record label Fool’s Gold. After the overwhelming success of his Best Of The Beast art show 2 years ago, Dust is now ready to bring us a new exhibition. This one is called B.K. Scum and it’s inspired by the work of experimental sound collective and multimedia pioneers Psychic TV.

The show opens Friday, March 4th at 350 Broadway, the gallery / retail home of clothing label Mishka, who will be releasing their own Psychic TV-inspired clothing collection, as well as an exclusive B.K. Scum tee shirt available for purchase at the show. In addition, Dust has teamed up with DJ / producer Star Eyes (Trouble & Bass) for a B.K. Scum mix, a collection of Psychic TV music and rarities collected throughout the years, along with exclusive vocals from Genesis. Download it now!

Late pass: DJ Hero 2 and Hennessy Blending of Art

November 22nd, 2010

I’m late on announcing my contribution to 2 projects…

First of all I’m in the new DJ Hero 2 video game.

Apparently this is what my section looks like. I don’t know why I’m in Vegas!

I made 2 “mixes” for the game (which you can preview on the youtubes below) and they also used a few of my other tracks elsewhere, like “Say Whoa” and my remixes for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and MSTRKRFT.

The way this worked is, I had to pick songs from a pre-cleared list and figure out ways to flip them, whether it be as a remix or some sort of mashup. I wanted to go for songs that already stood the test of time… party classics. Compared to the first DJ Hero game which to me didn’t always reflect what DJs are playing, I like the fact that this new one is more focused on electronic music and hip hop. Although to be honest I haven’t properly played the new one yet. I don’t even play video games! But I’m glad I got a chance to be a part of this.

Also, Hennessy recently launched a project called Blending Of Art where they paired a couple musicians with graphic artists and had them make their own customized version of a Henny bottle. I worked with Dust La Rock on one, and Kid Sister also made one with Fafi. Now pour it up…

“Barbra Streisand” release info… video coming soon!

September 21st, 2010

I know this is long awaited… long long long awaited. People have been asking us about this release ever since Armand and I played the song at WMC and it popped up on youtube. Then came the fan-made cover versions and all types of stuff floating around on blogs.

Well now, in the words of the great Biz Markie… “All samples cleared.”

So it is with great pleasure that we can finally announce the release of this fun lil’ ditty.
The main release date is Oct 11th (UK, pre-order here) and 12th (North America). Same for South Africa.
Australia is getting early dibs on Sept 24.  Germany gets it a little later, Oct 29.
Most other countries will get filled in around the same time.

Now before you go anywhere, take a second and soak in that cover art, courtesy of my man Dust La Rock.

There is also a video dropping soon, sooner than you think.

Meet the official Duck Sauce toy

March 17th, 2010

When Dust La Rock designed the Duck Sauce logo we knew right away we had to bring it to life. So we turned to Celebriducks, basically the Nike of rubber ducks, and made it happen! We only made 1,000 of these and they will be available later this month, starting exclusively with Colette, Kid Robot and Turntable Lab.

To answer your most burning questions:

- no they don’t squeak, but yes they float.

- yes we have new Duck Sauce songs, a bunch of them, and they are fonky.

My Zoo York board will never come out, peep it though!

Some of you know that I have a (sort of) brand called Sunglasses Is A Must. It’s just the name I use when I collaborate with other brands to make clothes, accessories and whatnot. I’ve had a couple of tees with Sixpack, my first ever tour tee with Kiser, my Capture The Flag cap with New Era x Skoold In Korectnuss, and even Kidrobot’s Grateful Bear bore the SIAM logo.

In 2007 I started a project with Zoo York and enlisted the help of my 2 most trusted designers, the closest I have to partners in SIAM: Dust La Rock and Cody Hudson. We started working on a pack that would include a varsity jacket, a skateboard shaped like sunglasses (which can really be skated on) and a tee.

Working with big brands can be tricky though because there’s marketing budgets and cycles and all sorts of red tape. But Zoo were always supportive, in large part thanks to our homie Kimou (Grotesk)’s involvement. Last year I got a sample of the deck, pictured above. I wanted to blog it so bad, but I couldn’t… Well, unfortunately the project is dead so here it is folks, my skateboard… my skateboard that you’ll never have! Haha. Don’t worry though, we’ve always got more goodies in the oven.

Signing at the Kidrobot store

June 16th, 2009

As announced last week, I have a toy coming out with Kid Robot designed by my trusty consigliere Dust La Rock. He and I will be at the New York Kidrobot store on July 1st for a signing. The toy officially drops the next day. Come say hi! Bring a muffin.

Toy with Kidrobot and Dust La Rock

June 10th, 2009

You see the bear at the top of this blog? His name is Grateful and he’s been my buddy for many years, ever since he appearing in the previous incarnation of djatrak.com. He was created by Dust La Rock, and soon he can be your friend too. Dust and I started working on a toy with Kid Robot a while back, even before the birth of Fool’s Gold. It takes patience to make one of these things and I’ve been itching to talk about it for so long… Ladies and gents here we are now, it’s official, it’s 8 inches tall (pause) and it’s coming out in early July!

Exhibition by my art director Dust La Rock

People always ask me who does my artwork… well 9 times out of 10 and for all the Fool’s Gold stuff, it’s my homie Dust La Rock. He’s debuting a new collection of work entitled Best Of The Beast this Thursday (4/23) in NYC so if you’re in town, please come out and tip your hat to the man! In fact we’re throwing him a party. RSVP here and make your way to the Christopher Henry Gallery on Thursday to get your third eye blown while listening to tunes courtesy of Queen Majesty, Vin Sol, Nick Catchdubs and my funky brother Dave 1.

I got the first Serato picture disk coming out!

December 31st, 2008

As you may know, Serato is from New Zealand. I just played in New Zealand last night for New Year’s Eve (midnight timeslot, holler). Well the guys told me they’d come out and bring me surprise. Ho ho ho, I didn’t expect this though! Sure I knew we were making a picture disk for Say Whoa to celebrate the release of my Running Man record (thank you Nike) but I didn’t know it was ready! And I also didn’t realize that it’s the first official Serato picture disk on their Whitelabel.net label. I’m not big on claiming credit but I guess I was the first DJ on Serato — I used to test out their beta version way before it was available commercially — so now it all came full circle.

I haven’t even tried it out yet but I believe the picture side plays Say Whoa and the other side is a Serato control tone. So the idea is, you use it as a control record and when you need to play regular vinyl to switch over with another DJ, you play my track!

Doesn’t Dust La Rock’s artwork look spiffy on that baby? The character’s name is Mr A and he likes to run.
