Free download: GLC & A-Trak mixtape from 2006
I started DJing for Kanye in 2004, and by 2005 I was spending most of my time on the road with him and his boys, seeing them more than my own family and friends. That was the year of the Touch The Sky tour, a sort of golden era in the history of Kanye touring. GLC and I became good friends pretty quickly, mostly on the strength of jokes and eventually discovering a common love for Project Pat album cuts. When it came to his own music, he was very driven, often recording freestyles in hotel rooms with his own mic and MBox. He just needed a bit of guidance, like most budding artists. We decided to work on a mixtape together. I would go to LA during downtime between tours (he moved there from Chicago) and after a couple of trips we had enough material to for this CD.
I still have fond memories of those trips. This was my first real experience coaching a rapper and doing artist development, which would turn into valuable lessons for my work with Kid Sister and Fool’s Gold down the line. We recorded a grip of songs and freestyles, and I remember Kanye gave me advice on which ones to scrap. But what makes this mixtape unique, in my opinion, is the skits. GLC is hysterical and I never stopped cracking up while recording those prank calls (they’re real) and the notorious “Ain’t It Mayne” competition. In fact once you listen you’ll probably want to start following Tator Chip on twitter: @TatorChipPimps.
The kitchen was also an important theme in those recording sessions, for two reasons. First, GLC cooked a lot and although his cooking technique was different than, say, my mom’s (butter in a spray, Foreman grill), the results were tasty. The second reason is that when we weren’t eating I had my turntables set up on the kitchen counters and that’s where I recorded all the scratches.
Once the music was wrapped we did a photo shoot on a tour stop in Detroit, and by the time the artwork was done and the CDs were pressed up it was early 2006.
Now, 4 years later, here it is for your listening pleasure. Download here or in the “Downloads” section.
Tracklist after the jump.
GLC & A-Trak cutting room floor
I just saw this mp3 on the Kanye blog… might as well post it here too since I produced it!
Back in 2005/2006 I made this mixtape with GLC called Drive Slow and one of the tracks we didn’t use was this cover of DJ Quik’s “Born And Raised”. There’s no instrumental of the original so I had to re-make the beat. I did the cuts too. Not sure why this is leaking now but hey, I always liked this joint… here it is.
Trumpets please!!!
Holy moly, sweet mother of all things that are sacred, by the beard of Zeus and the nectar of the gods. (Deep breath)
Ladies and gents, duderinos and duderinas (if you’re not into the whole brevity thing). I am hereby welcoming you to the long awaited, highly anticipated and fauna populated arrival of my new website!
Dem nah ready. That’s what I say. Dem nah ready.
Links galore. And France.
I’d like to start this update with a few links:
I wrote a diary of my Grammy experience for the Fader blog
MTV.com said that Tom Cruise liked my solo…
And GLC made this ghetto-ass iMovie masterpiece of a video for Chi State of Mind, which is the track I produced.
Now to pick up where the last update left off… I went to France in mid-January to promote the “Oh No You Didn’t!” CD. I’d been wanting to play in Paris for a long time and reconnect with the French cousins, but somehow there were always scheduling issues when I’d go to Europe. So I was really looking forward to this trip. And it didn’t disappoint!
2 new mixtapes for dat azz
Guess what guess what guess whaaaaaat. I have 2 CDs coming out this week. Wait, what’s this? Something else than a battle record for you to purchase? That’s right folks. We’re doing it real big in the 06. Here’s the skinny.
Kanye West presents: GLC & A-Trak “Drive Slow
I got together with the OG Gangsta L and we put in beaucoup work on this-here mixtape. If you downloaded “Chi State of Mind” on this fine website a little while back, it’s a good indication of what you’ll find on there. Seeing that the general public only heard him on “Spaceship” and “Drive Slow”, which probably isn’t enough to see what he represents, I wanted to make a mixtape that really encapsuled GL’s universe… so if you’re a fan of Scarface, UGK, Three 6, this one’s for you. All original songs and freestyles, all mixed by yours truly. You can cop it at MixUnit. And if you’re a store or wholesaler, MixUnit is also the exclusive distributor so hit them up.
A-Trak “Oh No You Didn’t” (Live in Vancouver)
This is a live mix that I did right before jumping on the Touch The Sky tour, and it’s coming out on Disque Primeur, our good friends in Frenchie-land. It starts off with some live routines and then goes into a long mix set, where you’ll find everything from De La to Daft Punk, from Mann Parrish to Mac Mall. This is a nice little preview of the type of stuff you might hear on the Sunglasses Is A Must tour this Spring. If you’re in North America, Turntable Lab will be bringing it to our shores (and to your neighborhood stores) in about a week or so.
Family Business profile: GLC
And now… In my ongoing quest to make this temporary website more exciting, I have a new addition to the diary: every week I’m gonna pick somebody who’s on tour with us and write my own little profile on them. I’ve got the inside scoop, yall! So let’s get into it…
GLC is Kanye’s childhood friend from the South Side of Chicago. You’ve all heard him on “Spaceship” and “Drive Slow”, and a couple of mixtape joints like “Heavy Hitters”. Chicago is notorious for its gangs, and GLC is a member of the GD’s. He grew up on acts like Scarface and the Geto Boys, UGK, Eightball & MJG, Dayton Family, Three 6 Mafia, Do Or Die, NWA, Master P — in fact he’s the only person I know who can quote album cuts from “Ghetto D”. But what’s funny is, although he’s undoubtedly got that OG-ness in him, in person he’s actually one of the funniest and most laid-back people I know. For instance, the man is a self-taught Photoshop genius. Yesterday he took a picture of the tour promoter, put his face on Archie Bunker’s body (the resemblance was uncanny), printed dozens of copies and posted them all over the backstage area. He also taught himself how to use iMovie and is finishing up his own lo-fi, ultra-gutter video for “Chi State of Mind” (which I produced — see below). He’s even starting his own animated cartoon series, featuring characters such as Tater Chip, Necklace, Fa’shawn and Porkchop. His bunk on the tour bus is a home-made multi-media entertainment center, complete with mini-speakers, PSP, hundreds of bootleg XBox games, and multiple issues of Smooth Girl and King magazine. He’s also the undisputed Foreman Grill champion.
News from tour
Happy Halloween everybody! I’ve got a treat for that azz: a new update! It’s better than candy.
Now let’s get right down to bidness. Put some shoes on and go buy the new issue of URB. Why? Well…
