From the vault: Obscure Disorder freestyle from 1997

A-Trak + Obscure Disorder – “HipHopSite.Com Promo (1997)” by DJ Pizzo

Props to DJ Pizzo for unearthing this lost freestyle. I don’t think I heard this since we recorded it in 1997! I’m gonna let him tell the story:

I had the honor of spinning with A-Trak this past weekend at my regular residency, XS Las Vegas. I thought it might be a good idea to dig up this unreleased joint A-Trak did for HipHopSite.Com with his old group, Obscure Disorder, way back in 1997. We had planned to release some kind of mix tape of freestyles to help jump off HipHopSite back then, but it never ended up coming to fruition.
I got with Dave-One, whom you might know from Chromeo, who was running an indie hip-hop imprint called Audio Research. Dave produced all the beats for his group Obscure Disorder, of which A-Trak was the DJ. They whipped up this cool little promo joint for us which finds A-Trak cutting up the words “HipHopSite.Com”, and juggling copies of Dave-One’s original beat. Here it is, for the first time ever. – DJ Pizzo

Troy Dunnit from Obscure Disorder: new video

April 28th, 2009

Now let me take a trip down memory lane. Who here knows about Obscure Disorder? Before Kanye, before Kid Sister, even before the Allies, my first affiliation was with this Montreal rap group. Obscure Disorder was produced mostly by my brother Dave 1 (sometimes by me), and the 3 MC’s were Dave’s high school friends: Troy Dunnit, Eclipse and Logic. Between 1997 and 2002 we released 5 singles on Audio Research, the defunct indie hip hop label that Dave and I ran together. The highlight was a collaboration with Non Phixion called “2004″.

Troy was the de facto frontman of the group, the only member to release a solo single on Audio Research while the group was still active. OD never really broke up, everyone just grew up and moved on to different projects. We had an album about 75% done but never finished it… Maybe we’ll dust it off the shelves one day and let you hear it.

In the meantime, check out Troy Dunnit‘s latest offering, a collaboration with fellow Montrealer Lotus entitled “New Flava” (produced by Lotus).

Around The World, pt. 9

December 01st, 2008

As posted on the fab Fader blog.

There ain’t much around-the-world-ness going on for me right now, folks. Now that I’m back from Paris I’m doing about 1 gig per week and for the most part staying home and recording. After Christmas I’ll be going to Australia and New Zealand but for now I’m rather sedentary. Last Thursday I did a gig in London…. Ontario! It’s a city about an hour away from Toronto. I think the last time I played there was in 1998, possibly with Obscure Disorder, the rap group from Montreal that I used to DJ for.
